2016 Spring Game Recap

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap the 2016 spring game.

041016_RenegadeReport

By splitting the roster using a team draft, FSU was able to play a competitive and entertaining spring game despite having 21 players out with injury.  Deondre Francois played well enough to cement himself as a legitimate contender to be the Noles’ starter on Labor Day.  However, we don’t believe he played well enough to be content or comfortable with his standing on the depth chart.  He will have to battle and beat Sean Maguire in the fall if we wants to start against Ole Miss.  Mailk Henry’s performance has Noles fans excited for the 2017 QB battle regardless of who wins the job in 2016.

Auden Tate, Travis Rudolph, Ryan Green, Jacques Patrick, Ryan Izzo, Marcus Lewis, Derwin James and Ro’Derrick Hoskins all played well in the game.

Looking at the big picture, it’s clear the 2016 team has the talent to compete for a National Title.  What remains to be seen is what kind of play will we get from the quarterback position and will this team have the hunger and killer instinct necessary to compete for a title.  We’re excited to have these questions answered and we’re excited about the potential of the 2016 team.

2016 Spring Practice – Week 3 Recap

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap the 3rd week of the Noles’ 2016 spring practice.

Offensively, Rick Leonard took first team reps at both right guard and right tackle. Deondre Francois continues to take first team reps at quarterback and Bobo Wilson returned to practice. Jacques Patrick was praised for running with toughness and finally using his size to get extra yards.

Defensively, Jimbo Fisher challenged Josh Sweat to play better. True freshman Josh Brown took first team reps at linebacker with Jacob Pugh missing some practices. Marcus Lewis took first team reps at cornerback with Marquez White out for the rest of the spring with a broken bone in his hand.

The week concluded with a scrimmage inside of Doak Campbell Stadium. Jimbo Fisher said the team needs to play with more consistency and toughness. We wonder aloud if he is holding this team to a realistic standard. Is he letting this team develop their own identity or is he trying to force an identity upon them?

2016 Spring Practice – Week 2 Recap

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles’ first scrimmage of the spring.

Although JJ Cosentino took first team reps during the portion of practice open to the media most of the week, all signs point to Deondre Francois being atop the quarterback depth chart.  Francois has won the team over with his maturity and work ethic.

The progress reports for Rick Leonard, Chris Casher and Ryan Green have been positive after their position changes this spring.  Leonard will battle for the starting right tackle spot.  Green’s speed and receiving ability has him in position to get quality reps.  Chris Casher is more natural catching the ball than we expected.  If he learns the playbook and nuances of the tight end position, his contribution won’t be limited to short-yardage blocking situations.

Defensively, most of the talk this week centered around the Derwin James at defensive end packages.  At cornerback, Tarvarus McFadden is currently the starter opposite Marquez White.  With White being sidelined with a broken bone in his hand, Marcus Lewis has been taking those starting reps.

SpringPracticePreview

Many fans, us included, think FSU will be National Title contenders in 2016. At the same time, those same fans acknowledge that in order for that to happen, several questions not only have to be answered but answered favorably if the Noles are going to have any shot at making the playoffs.

Talent, expectations and uncertainty make this the most exciting spring practice in recent memory. We break down each position group by discussing: what we know, what we don’t know, and what we think.

From the moment the Rose Bowl loss to Oregon ended, FSU fans pointed to 2016 as the year the Noles would once again compete for a National Title.  With major questions at quarterback, offensive line, linebacker, kicker and punter what has to happen for this year’s team to live up to those lofty expectations?

Which incoming freshmen do we expect to come in and make a major contribution? Which underclassmen do we expect to crack the 2 deep contribute?

Sunshine State Supremacy

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles 27-2 victory over the Florida Gators.

FSU matched Florida’s physicality and intensity from the opening kickoff and eventually the Noles’ superior talent and depth took over.

It was tough sledding for the offense against a very good Gators’ defense but Jimbo Fisher was able to scheme up enough chunk plays to put the offense in scoring position.  Eventually, Dalvin Cook and the offensive line wore down Florida’s defense and put the game out of reach.

The defense put constant pressure on Treon Harris; neutralizing his running ability by collapsing the pocket from the outside-in.  When necessary, Charles Kelly used Derwin James as a spy.  Despite rushing for 136 yards, Kelvin Taylor and the Gators’ rushing attack was contained all night.

Now that the season is over and FSU went 10-2 as predicted, we take a look back at the season as a whole and discuss the positives and negatives.  We also wonder aloud: what would FSU’s record be if Sean Maguire started all season?

Noles Ready For Showdown Against The Gators

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles’ 52-13 victory over Chattanooga.

112415_RenegadeReport

After an expected slow start, FSU used their superior talent and depth to dispatch of the Mocs.

Now everyone’s attention turns to the Florida Gators.  How will the offensive line hold up against the Gators’ front 4?  Can the receivers get open against a very good Florida secondary?  How will Sean Maguire handle the pressure of the Swamp’s hostile environment?

Defensively, the key to the Noles’ success is stopping the run, setting the edge and keeping Treon Harris in the pocket.  Despite their offensive struggles at various points throughout the season, there is still plenty of talent on the Gators’ offense.

We also briefly discuss the Jimbo Fisher to LSU rumors.

FSU Overcomes Slow Start & Turnovers To Beat NCState

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recaps the Noles’ 34-17 victory over the NCState Wolfpack.

111415_RenegadeReport

3 first half turnovers by Everett Golson led to a 10 point deficit and caused Jimbo Fisher to bench Golson and turn to Sean Maguire.  After 231 yards, 2 TDs and 27 unanswered points, we believe Sean Maguire will be the starting quarterback the rest of the season.  Dalvin Cook broke Warrick Dunn’s single season rushing record and totaled 155 yards from scrimmage on the day.

Defensively, we wonder aloud is it finally time to accept the fact that Charles Kelly is a good defensive coordinator.

We also discuss the importance of finishing the season 11-2 and how that can be beneficial for the 2016 season.

Missed Opportunities Cost The Noles A Chance To Upset Clemson

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai discuss the Noles’ 23-13 loss to Clemson.

110815_RenegadeReport

Last week we opened the podcast by asking who should start at quarterback. This week we open the podcast by asking did Jimbo’s decision cost FSU a game they could have won. Sean Maguire went 16-29, 164 yards 0 TDs and 1 Int. Despite numerous attempts, the vertical passing attack was virtually non-existent.

Once again, the defense played well enough to win a game that was ultimately lost but once again the defense failed to get a stop at the most crucial time of the game.

With no chance at an ACC title and no chance at a National title, we wonder aloud is it time to turn the page to 2016 and start getting more playing time for the younger players.
