2017 Fall Camp Week 2 Review

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai review week 2 of FSU’s 2017 Fall Camp.

The 2nd week of fall camp concluded with a scrimmage on Sunday night in Doak Campbell Stadium.  Jimbo Fisher seemed pleased with the effort and execution from all 3 phases of his team despite having 10-12 players not participate with various injuries.

The biggest news of the week came when Jimbo Fisher announced that if this was a game week, Derrick Kelly would be the starting left tackle.  Needless to say, Nolebra Kai is not happy with the constant “tinkering” on the offensive line.  Cole Minshew missed the scrimmage but Jimbo said that he, along with everyone else who missed the scrimmage, will be back at practice this week?

We wonder aloud will Matthew Thomas be included in the group of players who return to practice this week.  It has been long rumored that his final year of eligibility was in question due to academics.  Most of us feel that the “illness” that caused him to miss practice last week was really a final push to get qualified.

In an effort to improve the return game, FSU auditioned several different players for kickoff and punt return roles.  As it stands right now, Derwin James and Keith Gavin will be the kickoff returners.  Cam Akers and Amir Rasul will back them up.  It’s still not clear who the starting punt returner will be.

2017 Fall Camp Week 1 Review

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap the first week of fall camp.

Week 1 began with Jimbo Fisher’s introductory press conference and ended with an open practice inside Doak Campbell Stadium.

An already thin unit took a hit when wide receiver Da’Vante Phillips was arrested and charged with 5 felonies. Malique Jackson has switched from cornerback to receiver in a last ditch effort to earn some playing time. George Campbell being healthy instantly went from being a bonus to being a necessity.

The starting offensive line caught many in the fanbase off guard with Rick Leonard starting at left tackle and Derrick Kelly taking starting reps at right tackle. Alec Eberle seems to be cemented as the starting center.

Levonta Taylor is currently taking first teams reps at the field corner position. What other young DBs are inline for significant playing time?

2017 Fall Camp Preview

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai preview the start of FSU’s 2017 fall camp.

The Seminoles enter the 2017 season with high expectations. Most project FSU to be a top 5 team in the initial rankings and a September 2nd date with Alabama is the talk of college football.

If the Noles are to live up to the hype this season, there are some key questions that need to be answered in fall camp.

The most important question that needs to be answered is who will be the starting offensive line and how much have they improved. Deondre Francois took a beating last season and without a quality backup, his health is the key to this team reaching their full potential.

Defensively, the 2017 Seminoles are loaded with talent, depth and experience at every level. The question is what role with everyone play and are they ready to deal with no huddle – hurry up offenses?

FSU was routinely on the losing end of the special teams, hidden yardage stats in 2016. Improvement in that area should be another focus of fall camp.

2017 Spring Practice Preview

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai preview FSU’s 2017 Spring Practice.

Life without Dalvin Cook begins.  We expect a committee approach to replacing his productivity.  Although he’s true freshman, we expect Cam Akers to be Jacques Patrick’s primary backup to start the season.

Fans will delight in the fact that it is literally impossible for the offense to feature a “midget package” at wide receiver.  Jokes aside, the development of this unit will be the key to Deondre Francois’ development.

The offensive line will feature more size but does bigger equal better?

We also discuss Dameyune Craig’s return to FSU as an offensive analyst.

2016 Season Recap

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles’ 2016 season.

FSU finished the 2016 season by winning their last 5 games and 7 of the last 8.  Despite that finish, Herc. still feels like the season was a disappointment.  Jimbo Fisher and the coaching staff didn’t push the right buttons early in the season to get maximum effort from the players.  The offensive line continued to struggle.  The biggest disappointment was all the injuries (notably Derwin James) that prevented us from seeing just how good this team could be.

Despite the disappointments, there were several positives takeaways from the season.  FSU swept Florida and Miami for the 4th straight season.  They also proved to be the more physical team in their Orange Bowl victory over Michigan.

We also discuss whether or not there will be some coaching changes in the off season.

Fast Start Fuels FSU Blowout Over Boston College

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap Friday’s 45-7 victory over Boston College.

The Noles hosted a rare weekday home game in which both the offense and fan base showed up early. Dalvin Cook had a quiet 100 yard rushing game and Auden Tate had his first 100 yard receiving game. Senior night was capped by Sean Maguire coming in to throw 2 TD passes.

The defense dominated a limited Eagles’ offense. The key to their success was holding BC to 96 yards on 35 rushing attempts.

We also pose the question: Is Steve Addazio a suitable replacement for Rick Trickett?

Loafs And Lack Of Confidence Lead To Loss

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra recap Saturday’s loss to UNC and previews this week’s rivalry game against Miami.

The calendar turned to October and FSU is already out of contention for both a National and ACC title. Charles Kelly should not be the defensive coordinator in 2017 but we wonder aloud what other changes need to be made.

It’s hard to criticize Jimbo Fisher’s game plan when the offense scores 35 points and nearly 600 yards despite 3 missed field goals. However, we question Jimbo’s decision not to go for it on fourth down more often; especially with the defense playing so poorly.

Next up is Miami. Will FSU make it seven straight over the Hurricanes or is this the year Miami fans will finally have bragging rights again?

Defensive Struggles Linger As Noles Prepare For UNC

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles’ 55-35 victory over USF and preview Saturday’s game versus North Carolina.

After a shaky start, the defense settled in and shut USF out for over 38 minutes of gametime before allowing 3 touchdowns after the game had been decided.

After the game, Jimbo Fisher was not pleased with his team not finishing better. Will the message get through? Did Jimbo misread the culture of the locker room from the beginning of the season?

Outplayed, Outcoached, Outclassed

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles’ 63-20 loss to Louisville.

Simply put, FSU was outplayed, outcoached and outclassed yesterday. After the embarrassing loss, we take a closer look at the state of the program and discuss some inconvenient truths.

FSU is 6-4 in their last 10 games. Despite being told otherwise, Dalvin Cook is not healthy. Derwin James being out and Josh Sweat being limited doesn’t excuse giving up 63 points….the most in school history.

Physically, the talent is still there to have a successful season. The question is how will this team respond mentally and emotionally after being beat by 43 points.
