2016 Spring Game Recap

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai recap the 2016 spring game.

By splitting the roster using a team draft, FSU was able to play a competitive and entertaining spring game despite having 21 players out with injury.  Deondre Francois played well enough to cement himself as a legitimate contender to be the Noles’ starter on Labor Day.  However, we don’t believe he played well enough to be content or comfortable with his standing on the depth chart.  He will have to battle and beat Sean Maguire in the fall if we wants to start against Ole Miss.  Mailk Henry’s performance has Noles fans excited for the 2017 QB battle regardless of who wins the job in 2016.

Auden Tate, Travis Rudolph, Ryan Green, Jacques Patrick, Ryan Izzo, Marcus Lewis, Derwin James and Ro’Derrick Hoskins all played well in the game.

Looking at the big picture, it’s clear the 2016 team has the talent to compete for a National Title.  What remains to be seen is what kind of play will we get from the quarterback position and will this team have the hunger and killer instinct necessary to compete for a title.  We’re excited to have these questions answered and we’re excited about the potential of the 2016 team.

2016 Spring Practice – Week 2 Recap

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles’ first scrimmage of the spring.

Although JJ Cosentino took first team reps during the portion of practice open to the media most of the week, all signs point to Deondre Francois being atop the quarterback depth chart.  Francois has won the team over with his maturity and work ethic.

The progress reports for Rick Leonard, Chris Casher and Ryan Green have been positive after their position changes this spring.  Leonard will battle for the starting right tackle spot.  Green’s speed and receiving ability has him in position to get quality reps.  Chris Casher is more natural catching the ball than we expected.  If he learns the playbook and nuances of the tight end position, his contribution won’t be limited to short-yardage blocking situations.

Defensively, most of the talk this week centered around the Derwin James at defensive end packages.  At cornerback, Tarvarus McFadden is currently the starter opposite Marquez White.  With White being sidelined with a broken bone in his hand, Marcus Lewis has been taking those starting reps.

2015 Fall Camp – Week 2 Recap

In this episode of the Renegade Report Herc & Nolebra Kai recap an eventful week on and off the field for the Seminoles.

On the field, FSU held their first scrimmage of fall camp.  As expected, Jimbo said there was good and bad on both sides of the ball.  Chris Casher and Lorenzo Featherson will both be sidelined after minor knee surgeries.  Featherson is expected back in 1-2 weeks.  Casher also has a sprained MCL so his recovery will take 3-4 weeks.

During the week, Jimbo hinted that we may see more 2 TE sets this season.  Just how much should we expect to see?

Is it time to reevaluate our expectations for DE Josh Sweat this season?

Off the field, a trial date for Dalvin Cook has been set.  Matthew Thomas has been ruled ineligible for the 2015 season and FSU released their plan to address / prevent off the field issues.

2015 Wide Receiver & Defensive Back Preview

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai preview the wide receiver and defensive back positions for the 2015 season.

The wide receiver position features plenty of size and speed but it also features plenty of inexperience. Travis Rudolph and Jesus “BoBo” Wilson enter fall camp as the starters but expect Ermon Lane and Ja’Vonn “Pigg” Harrison to see plenty of snaps.

What kind of impact can we expect from newcomers: George Campbell, Auden Tate and Da’Vante Phillips?

Will Travis Rudolph emerge as the leader of the receiver corps now that Rashad Greene is off to the NFL?

There is no question that Jalen Ramsey is the leader of the defensive backfield. How will his move back to cornerback affect the rest of the secondary

How long will the other veterans of the secondary be able to fend off their younger, more talented teammates?

We also discuss ACC Media Day, preseason depth chart, injury updates and the latest developments in the Dalvin Cook case.

2015 Spring Practice – Week 1 Recap

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the first week of spring practice.

3 practices are in the books and while some off season questions have been answered, several questions still remain. Seminoles’ fans expected a quarterback battle this spring but it appears that Sean Maguire is fully entrenched as the starter.

It also appears that 4/5 of the starting offensive line has been established. The question is: who will be the starting center?

Defensively, we’ve seen a glimpse of the 2 deep but we’re no closer to answering the biggest defensive question: will the pass rush will improve? We do feel comfortable saying the 2015 defense will be hungrier and nastier than last season.

Jimbo Fisher has been pleased with the attitude and chemistry of this team. We question how much of those feelings are genuine and how much is him trying to instill confidence into a young / inexperienced team.

Undermanned, Outplayed, Unconquered

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the Noles 23-17 overtime victory over Clemson.

The Tigers outplayed FSU for the majority of the game but missed opportunities in the red zone coupled with FSU making enough plays in the 4th quarter and overtime turned out to be the difference in the game.

Late Friday night it was announced that Jameis Winston would be suspended the entire game and not just the first half as previously announced. Mario Edwards missed the entire second half with a concussion. The offensive line played their worst game since the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl. Despite all that, FSU still found a way to win.

Now they must put this emotional week behind them, get refocused and prepare for their first true road trip of the season against the undefeated North Carolina State Wolfpack.

2014 Offensive Preview

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai take a closer look at the 2014 Seminoles’ offense.

Despite of the losses of Freeman, Wilder, Benjamin and Shaw, the 2014 FSU offense still returns plenty of firepower led by Jameis Winston, Rashad Green, Nick O’Leary and Karlos Williams.

How will the offensive philosophy differ from 2013? What will be similar? What personnel packages should we expect to see this season?

In this week’s Haters vs. Homers segment, we debate the what the loss of Timmy Jernigan means to the defensive line.

2014 Spring Practice Preview – Defense

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai preview the spring practice storylines for the 2014 defense.

With spring practice beginning on March 19, we turn our attention to previewing the 2014 Seminoles defense.  FSU loses a lot of talent, experience and leadership with the departures of Timmy Jernigan, Christian Jones, Telvin Smith, Lamarcus Joyner and Terrence Brooks.  The general feeling is with the exception of Jernigan, FSU is poised to replace those departures with a player equally, if not more talented.

Despite the returning talent, there are still questions that need to be answered this spring:

  • After Goldman and Lawrence-Stample, how will the defensive tackle rotation shake out?
  • Will Charles Kelly opt for size or speed in replacing Telvin Smith and Christian Jones?
  • Where will Tyler Hunter, Jalen Ramsey, Nate Andrews and the rest of the defensive backs line up?
  • Which players will fill the leadership void left by the departing players?
