Defense Continues To Dominate As Spring Game Approaches

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the second scrimmage and give our overall impression of spring practice thus far.

It should come as no surprise that the defense got the better of the offense in both scrimmages. The offense is undergoing a complete makeover in terms of philosophy, tempo, and complexity while elements of Harlon Barnett’s cover 4 defense were present under Charles Kelly.  Not to mention, the majority of injuries to key players are on the offensive side of the ball.

Spring practice concludes with the Garnet & Gold game on Saturday and the teams have now been drafted.  We discuss the rosters and our expectations for the Spring Game.

We also discuss Bobby Bowden’s return to practice and what that signifies for the program.

2018 Spring Practice Preview

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai preview FSU’s 2018 spring practice.

We’ve seen signs that the culture surrounding the football program is changing. We’ve seen signs that the players are starting to have fun again. Now it’s time to see how well the players adjust to a new offensive and defensive scheme.

Spring practice begins on Wednesday and right now there are more questions than answers. Who has the upper hand at QB? How will the running back rotation shake out? Who will be the starters on the OLine? Is Tre McKitty ready to be the man at TE? Who steps up at DE behind Burns and Kaindoh? What is a reasonable expectation for the linebacker unit? Who starts in the secondary?

Aside from position battles, there are questions surrounding the new schemes being installed this spring. Will Taggart and Bell introduce more vertical passing concepts or focus primarily on the running game and horizontal passing attack?

Defensively, will Harlon Barnett continue to run his Cover 4 defense 80-90% of the time or will he go back to his Saban roots and try to be more multiple?

Make No Excuses, Blame No One, Do Something!

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai discuss the first few days of the Taggart Era at FSU.

It’s been 11 days since Willie Taggart was announced as the new head coach at Florida State. As expected, there’s a different energy surrounding the program and everyone is excited.

Music in practice and different uniform combinations are just a couple of changes that has players and fans excited. Speaking of uniforms, we propose a change to the standard away uniforms.

Now that Oregon has played their bowl game, we expect some coaching hires to be announced sooner than later.

FSU vs Alabama Preview & Prediction

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai preview the epic showdown between the Noles and Crimson Tide.

It’s been labeled as the “Greatest Opener of All Time” with #1 Alabama facing #3 FSU. To have any chance at winning, we believe FSU must do the following things:

Offensively, whether it’s moving the pocket, designed runs or scrambling, Deondre Francois needs to stay on the move.  The WR trio of Murray, Tate and Gavin must win one-on-one battles and make tough, contested catches.  We don’t expect the rushing attack to be very successful but we believe the running backs need to make their impact felt in the passing game.

Defensively, FSU must sell out to stop the run and make Jalen Hurts beat them passing the ball.  When Hurts drop back to pass, it’s imperative the pass rushers maintain their rush lanes and prevent him from scrambling.

2017 Fall Camp Preview

In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai preview the start of FSU’s 2017 fall camp.

The Seminoles enter the 2017 season with high expectations. Most project FSU to be a top 5 team in the initial rankings and a September 2nd date with Alabama is the talk of college football.

If the Noles are to live up to the hype this season, there are some key questions that need to be answered in fall camp.

The most important question that needs to be answered is who will be the starting offensive line and how much have they improved. Deondre Francois took a beating last season and without a quality backup, his health is the key to this team reaching their full potential.

Defensively, the 2017 Seminoles are loaded with talent, depth and experience at every level. The question is what role with everyone play and are they ready to deal with no huddle – hurry up offenses?

FSU was routinely on the losing end of the special teams, hidden yardage stats in 2016. Improvement in that area should be another focus of fall camp.

After a shaky start, the defense settled in and shut USF out for over 38 minutes of gametime before allowing 3 touchdowns after the game had been decided.

After the game, Jimbo Fisher was not pleased with his team not finishing better. Will the message get through? Did Jimbo misread the culture of the locker room from the beginning of the season?
