Defense Continues To Dominate As Spring Game Approaches

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai recap the second scrimmage and give our overall impression of spring practice thus far.

It should come as no surprise that the defense got the better of the offense in both scrimmages. The offense is undergoing a complete makeover in terms of philosophy, tempo, and complexity while elements of Harlon Barnett’s cover 4 defense were present under Charles Kelly.  Not to mention, the majority of injuries to key players are on the offensive side of the ball.

Spring practice concludes with the Garnet & Gold game on Saturday and the teams have now been drafted.  We discuss the rosters and our expectations for the Spring Game.

We also discuss Bobby Bowden’s return to practice and what that signifies for the program.

2018 Spring Practice Preview

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai preview FSU’s 2018 spring practice.

We’ve seen signs that the culture surrounding the football program is changing. We’ve seen signs that the players are starting to have fun again. Now it’s time to see how well the players adjust to a new offensive and defensive scheme.

Spring practice begins on Wednesday and right now there are more questions than answers. Who has the upper hand at QB? How will the running back rotation shake out? Who will be the starters on the OLine? Is Tre McKitty ready to be the man at TE? Who steps up at DE behind Burns and Kaindoh? What is a reasonable expectation for the linebacker unit? Who starts in the secondary?

Aside from position battles, there are questions surrounding the new schemes being installed this spring. Will Taggart and Bell introduce more vertical passing concepts or focus primarily on the running game and horizontal passing attack?

Defensively, will Harlon Barnett continue to run his Cover 4 defense 80-90% of the time or will he go back to his Saban roots and try to be more multiple?

The Chase Ends; The Journey Is Set To Begin

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai discuss “The Chase” and the ongoing efforts to change the culture surrounding the program.

Whether you wanted Jimbo Fisher to stay or you’re happy that he left, the one thing that is not debatable is the culture within the program was broken. The first signs of this can be traced back to the 2014 season and the issues continued to mount until the day he finally resigned.

For Willie Taggart, in order to change the on-field results this season, he must first change the sense of entitlement and lack of accountability that ruined what was a championship culture  just 4 short years ago.

That change officially began with Willie Taggart’s offseason conditioning program called “The Chase”.  It was the first chance for the players to get on the field and work with their new coaches.  Now that it’s concluded, the one major takeaway from The Chase is that they players once again realize that it’s ok to work hard AND have fun.

Now that spring practice is around the corner, concerns have risen about Willie Taggart and his staff’s inexperience when it comes to coaching in big games.  Another concern that’s been voiced is the fact that Taggart’s teams have been heavily penalized.

Too Many Black Coaches?

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai discuss the new coaching hires and the composition of the staff.

Going into the offseason, FSU fans felt like the 2 most important hires Willie Taggart had to make were the Defensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. With the hiring of Harlon Barnett and Greg Frey, Taggart has made 2 solid hires despite a lack of name recognition.

As expected, the ethnic makeup of this staff is an issue with some FSU fans. We discuss the impact this could have on recruiting and booster support.

Jimbo Out! Taggart In?

In this episode of the Renegade Report, Herc. & Nolebra Kai discuss Jimbo Fisher’s resignation from FSU.

Last week it seemed likely, this week it seemed inevitable and today it became official; Jimbo Fisher is no longer FSU’s football coach.  He will sign a 10 year, 75 million dollar contract to become Texas A&M’s new coach.  Despite the way things ended, Jimbo Fisher should be applauded modernizing the program and bringing FSU their 3rd National Title.

The top target to replace Jimbo is Willie Taggart.  How do we feel about Taggart becoming FSU’s new coach?  What coaches are rumored to be joining him at FSU?
